Tool 12-Your Choice

For our final tool you have a choice and will post your discoveries here under comments. Describe the tool and discuss what it does, how you use it, what educational/personal applications it has, and anything else we'd might like to know.

You are free to try any tool you have heard of that we have not done yet, or try one of these two: Pinterest or Evernote.

Pinterest is the latest craze. I have not had time to mess with it too much but wow what a bunch of great ideas! It involves making virtual pinboards to collect clips. Here is one I started about library design http://pinterest.com/bmalapan/library-design/ You can create as many pinboards as you want and you can follow people for ideas. Here is one my friend Lisa made for holiday ideas http://pinterest.com/ohara2020/holiday-ideas/ You will need an invite to Pinterest so you can request one here http://pinterest.com/landing/

Evernote is a way for you to capture anything. Save your ideas, things you like, things you hear, and things you see. I have not used this one at all but I have heard great things about it. It already installed on my new laptop.

You can also experiment with any other tool you have heard about. If you want to try SKYPE at home or may Google PLUS or anything else, now is the time to try something new. Image Chef has some cool stuff on it you can try.

Here are more ideas to try the ones we didn't do:
Some things I would suggest that don’t require a download:

  1. I was intrigued by the timetoast timeline tool, so I checked it out and whipped this up: http://www.timetoast.com/timelines/342034
It was easy! Setting up the account was a snap and there are many model timelines to look at. To create a timeline, you simply determine a range of time and then "create events" to populate the timeline. Each event can be customized by adding images. I think this would be a fun visual exercise for students to use in class to map out the plot of a novel or short story, or a research project...so easy that kids who have limited access to technology at home will grasp it quickly. Because it is a timeline, it is somewhat limited - I had to just go ahead and randomly pick a start/finish date. No way to customized that such as having a timeline with no dates, just points on the line. Still, I can see using this on the SmartBoard or as part of an oral presentation. Fun!

  2. http://pinterest.com/azlizard22/mexico-city/

I really really like this tool Pinterest. Being a "list-maker", this was really fun for me, to pin all sorts of pictures that represent stuff i like. the possibilities are endless with me and my "lists"...this is a great place to keep track of all of that. The site is really easy to use once you get the little "pin it" button installed on your favorites bar. it took a couple of days to get invitation to join but after that it was really easy. i dont know how this could be applied to classroom, but I did make a "board" for Mexico City and students could at least browse through the pictures and see some of the places that i traveled to. I really liked this one.

  3. I really like Evernote! I use it to take notes during the department chair meetings on my iPad (the only problem is that I can't get the notes to email successfully to myself at work - I think it's an Amphi problem and not necessarily a Evernote problem). I have also used it to save emails that are really important and that I want to make sure that I have access to in the future (it seems like once my email gets archived, I can't ever find it again!). It's a great tool!!
My son loves Xtranormal and Voki! He uses both in class and for class projects.

  4. I decided to break down and try Google + since everyone and his brother was swamping me with invites. I really think I will like the fact that I can video chat with several people at once. My brother in law and sister in Mississippi will certainly like that we can all chat together with my son in Japan.

  5. I love evernote. I have it on my cell phone, so it help me get better organized. No more post-its flying in the wind! Its great that it can sync between my phone and computer. It lets me record websites of interest and store documents all in one place.
Maybe I can even store all of my username and passwords....

It would be a great organizer for students, as well.
