Now I know what you might be thinking: I don't want to TWEET. If after trying this tool you do not want to keep it, it is very easy to delete your Twitter account. I don't tweet my daily activities, although I should be doing more sharing. I am basically a mooch. I suck all the incredible resources from those wonderful and giving people who are willing to share and who obviously don't ever sleep:) I like sleep.
I still use email to spread the word about a new tool to others. Email is pretty "old school " but it works. The only problem is it is limited to just CDO teachers. I have others who are interested so now I have to do a second post for them on Facebook, but that is also a closed group.
With Twitter, anyone who wants to can follow my posts. It puts the onus on them instead of me. I don't have to remember to include them in my group, they don't have to read my posts, and it is worldwide. I use Twitter as my PLN (Personal Learning Network) to keep up with all the great technology coming out so quickly. I also have set my account up so a few people I follow I get a text message to notify me when they post. My favorite person to follow is Richard Byrne from http://www.freetech4teachers.com/ Other goods one are Larry Ferlazzo and Tucson Values Teachers.

Read "Twittering, Not Frittering: Professional Development in 140 Characters" from Edutopia, and then create a Twitter account for yourself. Here is some help info from Twitter https://support.twitter.com/groups/31-twitter-basics
If you're comfortable with this, set your account as "Public" (that way we can all find you on Twitter). If not, then I think you have to approve individual people to be your followers. If you choose to be "Private," please give me "bethmalapanes" permission to follow you! Do a few Internet searches to find leaders in your area and search within Twitter. You could also search for politicians, retails stores, music groups, sports figures, or those who have similar passions. Chances are that they will have a Twitter account (for example, I might search for leaders in the world of school librarianship). "Follow" at least three of them, post your Twitter name to my blog here under comments (mine is bethmalapanes), and then let us know who you're following.
To complete Tool 4:
Create a Twitter account
Find at least 3 people to "follow"
Re-tweet at least 3 of their posts
Post your Twitter name to my blog
Tell us who you're following
Reflect on your experience using/reading about Twitter. Do you think you would use Twitter? How could it be applied to a school setting?
oh boy...this is crazy.

i swore i would never do a twitter account. my students have been harassing me since last year to do it. Now that they know i have a twitter they are just tweeting and re-tweeting all about it. I am not sure how i could use this in education but maybe if students had homework questions or if i posted the homework on it...I also think that professionally, i could follow teachers who share classroom ideas. I am interested in this, just not too familiar with it right now. i like following things i am interested in like music and sports, but i dont want to follow a whole bunch of poeple. I followed TWO students (who asked me to follow them) for a total of one hour or so and in that time, my twitter was BOMBARDED with a bunch of tweets from their friends and people they follow because they kept retweeting all of it. So i "unfollowed" them because i didnt want so much clutter. Anyways i think this is kind of fun. right now I am following lady gaga, Ellen, and my favorite music and sports.
Yes I follow a bunch of people but it got overwhelming so I really only pay attention to a few and I get notified by teaxt only when they post
Deleteoops text! not teaxt

I'm following Premier Designs Jewelry, Jess Weiner and internships.com.
I'm still not sure how I'd use it. I'm hoping to find a use for it for my jewelry business, and it seems like there might be a use for it in the internship class...but I'm still kicking that idea around. It seems like a bit of a steep learning curve and a time sink.
Yes you can have people follow you and post sale times and discounts on Twitter. It isn't bad if you are already posting your stuff in Facebook you can link the accounts too. Kids can follow you and get texts when you post but I think you already do that with another tool??
DeleteI set up a twitter account last year in order to get updates about the Wilson K-8 buses - my account is mbarcani. I've never used the account since that time (and I've never checked to see if the bus is on time)! Tonight I added the University of Arizona, International Baccalaureate, and Beth to my list of followers. I'll reflect on my blog.

ReplyDeleteI started a twitter account in June while at the AP grading in Cincinnati. It was recommended to get updates on scoring. The first person I followed was Trevor Packer. He would send out observations as to how the tests were being scored and some preliminary general results.
I have since added mostly news sites and several other professional organizations.
I re-tweeted several tweets and I can't figure out where they appear. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteThose who follow you will see them. You can see them if you go to yuor profile.
DeleteI've been on Twitter for quite a while (BrilliantBrntte). I use it for my blog (not the one for this class), which is also kind of a side job for me. I follow quite a few people and am pretty active on it since I use it for networking with other bloggers and companies. I keep the people that I follow organized in different lists so I don't have to view 300 people in my timeline. So, if I want to see what certain companies are doing, I just go to my "companies" list and it basically mutes everyone else while I'm on that page. It makes it so much easier to deal with.
ReplyDeleteIn the classroom, I can see using it for homework assignments, helpful websites, and even homework help. You could use different hashtags (https://support.twitter.com/entries/49309-what-are-hashtags-symbols) for each period and students can tweet questions they may have about homework or class in general. The hashtags would allow the teacher to know what assignment or class a student is referring to.
I created a Twitter account a couple months ago to follow scholarship sites. My twitter name is 'rosesver'. I'm not sure I'll use Twitter. With email and facebook I feel like I'm on my computer too much as it is. I don't think I need another site right now. I'll still play with it and see what my possibilities are.
ReplyDeleteI created a Twitter account last summer at a tech class. I don't check in that often because I could spend hours following the links to all the stories and videos. I follow John Elway, Denver Broncos, US Geological Survey, NPR, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Barack Obama, and Beth Malapanes, among others. I would never use this as social media, but I have a lot of students who do. I could see using this for posting messages and reminders to students.

ReplyDeleteAnyway, I chose to follow Michael Pollan, IB, Global Education,Goodreads, and the Onion (of course). By the time I'd finished browsing who I wanted to follow, the Onion had spammed it up pretty good - I will be "un-following" them pronto. I read the article, and have to agree that for me, it looks like a tool primarily good for professional development, but I will look for ways to use it with the kids (ways that preserve my quality of life that is).
My twitter account is julie marie cota. Apparently I am following the NBA and Justin beiber(for my niece), and the American School Counselors Association. Not sure about using this resource with students.
ReplyDeleteYou could have a Twitter feed from the counseling dept with announcements maybe
DeleteMy twitter account is azangelgrl
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say I'm following Bill Gates, Gabby Giffords,
ReplyDeleteAZ Daily Star along with others.
My twitter account is mathmuse. My husband created this account for me several years ago. I'm not sure why, and I never used it. I put in to follow eye on education, common_core and parccplace. I will be interested to see what types of updates and information I can glean from this tool.
ReplyDeleteAs far as using it in a teaching environment, I'm not too sure. I feel as though I would not like the bombardment of information - it's hard enough to keep up with email. I think the postings of work on my website are adequate. I have never had the need for instant updates to my students.(?)
